Modified POM Application Review by Part Function
Industry labels are not enough to select a modified POM compound. A gear in an actuator, a valve mechanism, and a conveyor guide may all use POM, but they create different contact, load, tolerance, and validation requirements. This application review starts with what the molded part must do, how it can fail, and what evidence is needed to compare material directions. Use it to prepare an early screening brief before reviewing exact grades, TDS documents, mold behavior, and representative part trials.

Moving Contact: Gears, Bushings, Sliders And Rollers
Treat a moving part and its counterpart as one contact system. The correct material direction depends on the failure to control, not simply on a low-friction or wear-resistant label.
- Define torque or contact load, speed, movement pattern, duty cycle, alignment, expected life, and whether the assembly starts after long idle periods.
- Record the counterpart material, hardness, surface finish, lubrication, contact area, and acceptable wear on both the POM part and mating surface.
- Separate wear life, running friction, breakaway force, stick-slip, noise, heat, and dimensional retention into individual acceptance criteria.
- Compare unfilled, wear-resistant, low-friction, or reinforced directions against the dominant failure mode instead of assuming one modification improves every contact condition.
- Validate shortlisted grades in representative geometry and contact conditions; standard specimen values cannot reproduce tooth form, edge loading, alignment, or surface finish.
